Bob Bruu is a contemporary wood carver whose work explores the intersection of craftsmanship, realism, and perception. Working primarily with basswood, Bruu transforms a single block of wood into lifelike representations of everyday objects—such as hats, sneakers, and other familiar forms—challenging viewers to question what is real and what is crafted.
Bruu’s process balances precision and artistry. Each piece is meticulously carved by hand and finished with multiple layers of paint to achieve a level of realism that blurs the boundaries between sculpture and illusion.
Bruu’s work draws inspiration from ordinary, often overlooked items, reimagining them as artifacts of identity, culture, and memory. By rendering these objects in wood, he elevates the commonplace, encouraging a renewed appreciation for form, texture, and craftsmanship.
Working from his 100 yr old Barn Studio in McKinney, TX, Bruu continues to push the expressive potential of wood as a medium—bringing quiet, lifelike presence to objects that feel both familiar and extraordinary.

This wood carved Dallas Cowboys hat is signed by Cowboys legend Emmitt Smith. Accompanied by an inscription of “All-Time Leading Rusher”. Under the bill of the hat is “18,355”, the number of career rushing yards Emmitt recorded. This has a Certificate of Authentication by Tristar.
